It is said this area was appreciated as beautiful camellia hills with a long history dating back some 700 years. In the Meiji era, Prime Minister Aritomo Yamagata formally established a luxury garden oasis in the heart of Tokyo. To inherit the heritage of the place, we carefully selected plants and placed them in a way that a new shrine looks like a part of the existing mountain.

南北朝の頃から景勝の地であり、自生する椿で有名だった「ツバキヤマ」は明治には山縣有朋の指導のもと、目白台地の緩傾斜をうまく取り入れた日本随一の名庭園となりました。現在も、その伝統を受け継ぎ東京の緑のオアシスを提供する椿山荘。こういった貴重な遺産を伝えていく為既存の植生にあった樹木を選定し、また、緩傾斜が一部隆起して出来たような神殿のコンセプトに合う椿山荘の森になじむ樹木や石の素材を配置しました
